Tabs are manufactured and riveted onto easy-open end panels using a high-speed conversion press.
Bending rigidity is achieved through a combination of the packaging steel’s thickness and hardness and the shape of the tab.
The most resistant shapes typically have sharp radii, and may require a packaging steel with a minimum level of elongation.
For standard tab geometries, grades TH520, TH550 and TH620 are frequently used. Lower strength grades such as TH435 and TH460 are also available.
For highly demanding tab geometries, ArcelorMittal recommends TH550N, TH620N, and TH650N.
Metallic and organic coatings:
Packaging steel for tabs is usually delivered with a zinc coating (1.5/1.5 µm thick) to prevent rust. Tin and chromium coatings are also available.
Packaging steel for tabs is always delivered with an organic coating. These are usually Clear or Gold and are pigmented with aluminium.
